Conjugation Cheat Sheet

Verb groups

Japanese verbs fall into three groups based on how they conjugate.

Group 1: Godan

Ends in う, つ, る, む, ぶ, ぬ, く, ぐ, す. The final sound shifts between vowel rows.

Group 2: Ichidan

Ends in る after an い- or え-sound (たべる, みる). Drop る and add the ending.

Group 3: Irregular

する and くる, plus nouns that take する (勉強する).

Not every verb that sounds ichidan is: these common ones are godan — かえる (帰る), きる (切る), はいる (入る), はしる (走る), しる (知る), いる (要る), へる (減る), すべる (滑る), しゃべる, にぎる (握る).

Godan te-form and past

Godan verbs change their ending based on the final kana. Ichidan verbs simply drop る and add て / た.

Godan te-form and past endings by final kana
EndingTe-formPast
う, つ, る〜って〜った
む, ぶ, ぬ〜んで〜んだ
く〜いて〜いた
ぐ〜いで〜いだ
す〜して〜した

One exception: いく (行く) becomes いって / いった, not いいて / いいた.

Verb forms

Godan and ichidan verbs follow predictable patterns.

The godan causative passive shown here (のまされる) is the common contracted form. The full form のませられる is equally correct. Verbs ending in す only use the full form (話させられる).

Irregular verbs

する and くる have to be memorized.

Other exceptions worth knowing

  • ある — the negative is ない / なかった, not あらない
  • くれる — the imperative is くれ, not くれろ
  • いらっしゃる, おっしゃる, くださる, なさる — the polite form is 〜います, not 〜ります (くださいます), and the imperative ends in 〜い (ください)

Adjectives

い-adjectives replace the final い (the polite form just adds です). な-adjectives take the ending directly (な only appears before nouns).

One exception: いい conjugates from よい — よくない, よかった, よくて. The polite form is still いいです.

Other standard forms are just as correct, and the practice accepts them: 〜ではない for 〜じゃない (the contraction), 〜くありません for 〜くないです, and 〜ならば for 〜なら.
